Istanbul International Puppet Festival

On this year's International Puppet Festival, which will be held between the 16th and 26th of October, the two Dutch participants Ulrike Quade and choreographer Nicole Beutler translate Sophocles’ original story into images and, in doing so, they make the tragedy of Antigone and Ismene’s unequal treatment palpable. The Japanese Bunraku puppets – Antigone, Ismene and Polyneices – are moved by three performers and appear to be actually dancing. They aren’t bound by gravity, by the rules of the body or the fear of death. The puppets are the protagonists and the performers make up the chorus; they consider, react and reflect. But it’s a paradox. It’s the chorus, in the supporting role, which holds the reins. In this game of manipulation, who’s pulling whose strings?

In addition, some events regarding the International Puppet Festival will be hosted in the Chapel of Dutch Consulate-General. For more information, venues and the programme, please visit:
